Drawing Near: March
A monthly newsletter filled with images, reflections and life updates.
As I’m sitting here writing this month’s newsletter, I feel a deep sense of gratitude and thankfulness for the way it invites me to pause and reflect on the days and weeks that have recently passed. Taking time to look back through photos and revisit memories is still a new practice for me, and I hope it’s something I become more and more comfortable with over time.
The last two months have been an absolute blur but still packed full of some awesome moments.
Let’s dive in ✨
Images
I almost never photograph anything related to nature or landscapes, but lately I’ve found myself yearning for springtime to come. For longer days and fresh blooms. These two images were photographed earlier this week while walking through Cherokee park with two other friends, Alex and Lincoln.
We jumped down into the creek and allowed the water to guide us. At some point, I decided I wanted my images to involve more movement, they felt a little too stagnant. The blur in these feel reflective of how quickly I’m moving around these days. I have enough time to taste peaceful moments, but not fully savor them.
Reflections
The beginning of March came with a nasty, nasty storm. Wind gusts reached speeds between 60 and 80 miles per hour, and thousands of people lost power.
The day after the storm, I was struck by how many large, mature trees had fallen over. Being my curious self, I did some quick research and learned these events are commonly referred to as windthrow.
Windthrow is usually caused by more than just the wind itself. The issue is deeper, down in the roots. “Either by nature or neglect, when roots are destabilized, any amount of wind can catch the tree’s canopy, disrupt its balance, and topple it without notice.”
I’m sure there’s a full life lesson to unpack here, but learning about windthrow simply reminded me how important it is to take care of my roots. I’ve been asking myself questions like: How am I relieving stress? What am I filling my body, mind, and time with? Are there unhealthy habits I need to find replacements for?
You get the point.
Paying attention to the things no one sees is so, so important because it’s not a matter of if storms will come, but when.
Life Updates
I’ve been spending a lot of time sitting in the window seats of Quills on Baxter and walking the hills of Cherokee Park.
If you’re in the Louisville area, we’re having a Spring Moving Sale at work this Saturday, April 1 to get rid of gently used and retired inventory before we move into our new building.
This album Twenty Four from Jonthan Ogden has been on repeat. Also…I’ve been listening to a good amount of country music recently? So there’s that.
Learned how to play two new board games: Survive, Escape From Atlantis and Chickapig
If you haven’t already, please fill out this form so I can have your updated contact information handy.
The hype behind coffee mugs from East Fork Pottery is real. I recently ordered a few in Black Mountain and had the chance to interview the co-founder on How You Create.
The folks at The dePaul School are kind. They invited me to their annual de Party for de Paul fundraiser where I got to see some of the images I created for them last Fall on display.
Special shoutout to my sweet Miranda. I’m sorry you had a rough start to your week. I hope reading this puts a smile on your face. I love you! 🖤
Andddd that’s all for this month’s newsletter. See you next month!
